The Southington Fire Commission voted to send a request to the Town Council for its support of a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant, which provides funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase or maintain the number of trained firefighters available in their communities.
The goal of SAFER grants is to enhance the local fire departments’ abilities to comply with staffing, response and operational standards established by the National Fire Protection Association.
The commission has been tasked with reducing overtime and the SAFER grant will assist in this goal. Call volume has increased significantly as shown by data from 2012 to present. The Fire Department is asking for the Town Council’s assistance through a letter of support for the 2018 SAFER grant, which is a six month process.
