Scoreboard: Sports results on Sunday, June 11

Southington American Legion Baseball: After earning its first win of the season with a win over Terryville (1-2) on Friday, Post 72 fell right back into the loss column after dropping both games of a doubleheader to Avon (4-0) at home. Avon took game one by a large count of 10-3. The score was knotted at 1-1 after the second inning, but Avon pulled away with nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined. Southington’s rally fell short with a pair of runs in the sixth, finishing with seven hits and two errors. Jeremy Mercier went 2-for-4, as Southington stranded 12 runners on base. Ryan Sheehan (0-1) started on the mound and went three and two thirds innings, allowing five walks, four hits, and three earned runs. Vinny Viturale and Jake Weed saw some action on the mound as well, and Justin Verilli closed. Game two was a lot closer, but Avon still managed to edge Southington by a pair of runs, 2-0. Avon scored their lone two runs of the game off a pair of base hits with two outs in the fourth and sixth innings. Southington mustered just three hits and committed two errors. Connor McDonough (0-1) started on the mound and went five innings with six strikeouts, allowing two hits and a walk. Jake Weed closed. Post 72 will be back on the diamond next week with games against Wolcott (3-1), Torrington (1-4), Unionville (0-4), and Simsbury (3-1). Southington is currently 1-3 overall and seventh out of nine teams in the Zone 1 standings. Avon is in first.


Bristol Blues Baseball: The Blues rounded out the week by earning their third-straight win by edging the Worcester Bravehearts (5-3) by a run, 6-5, on the road. The Bravehearts held a 5-2 heading into the eighth inning, but Max Goione (2-for-5) brought the Blues to within two with an RBI single. Jeff Shanfeldt cut the deficit to a run with an RBI single in the ninth, and Mitch Williams (2-for-5) scored the go-ahead run with a two-run blast over the fence moments later. Tommy Curtin came in to close out the game in the bottom of the inning and got the save with a strike out, ground out to the mound, and fly out to the shortstop. The Blues finished with 11 hits, as Kyle Pileski went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Tyler Kovalewich started on the mound and went five innings with six strikeouts, allowing five walks, four earned runs, and three hits. John Natoli (1-0) picked up the win after going three innings with a pair of strikeouts in relief of Kovalewich, allowing four hits and an earned run. The Blues will look to keep their winning streak going next week with games against the Brockton Rox (4-2), divisional Wachusett Dirt Dawgs (2-5), divisional Bravehearts, North Shore Navigators (0-7), and Seacoast Mavericks (4-5). Bristol is currently 3-6 overall and third out of four teams in the West Division. The Pittsfield Suns (8-1) lead the West.
