APPLE HARVEST ROAD RACES
All races are sponsored by the Southington Community YMCA. Forms are available for pre-registration (by Oct. 3 at noon) at the YMCA membership desk. 5 MILE ROAD RACE—Sunday, Oct. 4, 8:30 a.m., beginning on Columbus Blvd. Race divisions: 10 to 15; 16 to 19; 20 to 29; 30 to 39; 40 to 49; 50 to 59; 60 to 69; 70 to 79; 80 & over. Awards will be presented for the first Southington male and femal (Dave Gworek Memorial Award) and the first SHS soccer player (Chris Sanchez Memorial Award). Cost is $22 ($27 on race day).
5K ROAD RACE—Sunday, Oct. 4, 8:45 a.m., beginning on Columbus Blvd. Race divisions: 8 to 10; 11 to 13; 14 to 16; 17 to 19; 20 to 29; 30 to 39; 40 to 49; 50 to 59; 60 to 69; 70 to 79; 80 & over. Cost is $22 ($27 on race day).
2 MILE WALK—Sunday, Oct. 4, 8:30 a.m., on the Southington rail trail. Walk starts in front of the YMCA. Cost is $10 ($15 on race day).
THE Y CUP—Sunday, Oct. 5, 8:45 a.m., beginning on Columbus Blvd. Three-member relay teams for the 5K race is open to boys and girls in grades 4 and 5. Registration will be available at Southington elementary schools in September.
LITTLE FRITTER FUN RUNS—Sunday, Oct. 5, immediately following the road race, at the Town Green. Variety of kids (2 to 7 years old) races run around the town green. Cost is $10 ($15 on race day).
MUSIC/VOLUNTEERS ON THE COURSE—Interested in providing music on the course for the athletes? Interested in volunteering in another way? Contact John Myers at the YMCA for details. Volunteers receive a free t-shirt.
PAVERS FOR POSTERITY (BLUE KNIGHT BRICKS)—The Turf Committee is offering an opportunity to purchase bricks to help defray costs for the artificial turf field at Southington High School. Bricks cost $125 and can be engraved with three lines of type (14 characters per line). Bricks will be displayed as part of a walkway and patio at the entrance to the turf field complex. Bricks can be purchased at the Southington Chamber of Commerce, the Parks & Recreation Department, or at the Southington High School Athletic Department.
FIELD HOCKEY IN TRAINING (FHIT) CAMP—Tuesday, Aug. 11-Friday, Aug. 15, 9 a.m.-11 a.m., at Panthorn Park. Open to players entering grades 5-12 and aimed at everyone from beginners to advanced players. Cost is $120. Contact: Sue Abacherli, (860) 877-2105.
HAWKS LANDING JUNIOR GOLF ACADEMY—Monday, July 13-Thursday, July 16 (Session I), or Monday, July 27-Thursday, July 30 (Session II), or Monday, Aug. 3-Thursday, Aug. 13 (Session III), 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Hawks Landing CC. Cost is $225 per session, and daily lunch is included. SOUTHINGTON ELKS GOLF TOURNAMENT—Friday, Aug. 14, 10 a.m. shotgun start, at Hawks Landing CC. Scramble format. Register by July 31. Cost is $95 per golfer and individuals or foursomes are welcome. SOUTHINGTON POOL HOURS—The Southington Town Pools at Memorial Park and Recreation Park are open for the season. Pools will be open from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and noon to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. Hours are subject to change based on weather conditions. Town Pools are open to Southington residents only; however, each resident may bring one non-resident guest. Proper ID and proof of residency is required to gain entry to the pools. Admission is free. SWIMMING LESSONS REGISTRATION—Registration for the second session of swimming lessons will be held on Tuesday, July 14 (Memorial Park pool) or Monday, July 20 (Recreation Park pool), 5:30 p.m.-8 p.m., in the Town Hall lower level conference room at 75 Main Street. Open to Southington children, ages 5 and up and lessons must be taken at the poll for which they have registered. Proof of residency is required (a driver’s license is sufficient). Parents of returning swimmers should bring last year’s swim card. Parents of first time students should bring the swimmer’s birth certificate. Cost is $55 per child ($125 for 3 siblings, $150 for four). Lessons will be held between 10 a.m. and noon, but specific lesson times will be determined at registration. Space is limited. TENNIS LESSONS—Registration is underway for the annual summer instructional program open to Southington residents aged 4-18. Session III: July 20-30. Session IV: Aug. 3-13, at the SHS tennis courts. Each two-week session runs Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. (ages 4-6); 9:45 a.m.-10:45 a.m. (ages 6-7); 11 a.m.-noon (ages 8-9); 12:15 p.m.-1:15 p.m. (ages 10-18) with Fridays open for rain dates if needed. Cost is $65 per session, and a smaller, lightweight racquet will be provided for children aged 4-9. Class size is limited. Pre-registration and payment is required.
TENNIS MATCH PLAY—Session III: July 20-30. Session IV: Aug. 3-13, at the SHS tennis courts. High school students (grades 9-12) will play from 8 a.m.-9:30 a.m. Middle school students (grades 6-8) will play from 9:45 a.m.-11:15 a.m. Open to Southington residents entering grades 6-12 in the fall. These two-week programs are for experienced tennis players to play against each other in an organized setting with guidance from the Park & Rec tennis coaches. Cost is $30 per session. Space is limited. Pre-registration and payment is required.
TENNIS LESSONS FOR ADULTS—Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 21-Aug. 6, 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m., at the Panthorn Park tennis courts. Cost is $65 per person, and class size is limited to 15 participants on a first come, first served basis. Participants must bring their own racquet and water bottle.
YOUTH FALL BALL REGISTRATION—Thursday, July 23 or Thursday, July 30, 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m., at the Recreation Park baseball concession stand. Open to Southington residents, ages 6-15, as of April 30, 2015. Teams play in the Central Connecticut Fall Ball League. Cost is $110 for 8U, 10U and 12U; $130 for 13U and 15U. BASEBALL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY—Sunday, July 26. Cost is $94 (adult) and $84 (children 12 and under). Includes transportation, admission to the Baseball Hall of Fame, tickets for the induction ceremony at the Clark Sports Center (1:30 pm), and leisure time. A tour director will accompany this trip.
SARATOGA RACE COURSE—Saturday, Aug. 1. Cost is $82 per person and includes transportation, admission, reserved seating, hot dog, soda, and race program.
BOSTON DUCK TOUR & FENWAY PARK—Saturday, Aug. 22. Cost is $108 per person and includes transportation, a Boston Duck Tour, tour of historic Fenway Park, and leisure time at Quincy Market. A tour director will accompany this trip.

FREE LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA FITNESS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS—Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 28-Dec. 16, 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. The Southington Community YMCA is offering a free Livestrong at the YMCA Program, a 12-week, small group fitness program designed for adult cancer survivors 18 and over under the guidance of specially trained health and wellness staff. Participants do not need to be a current member of the YMCA or need to be a Southington resident. The class format consists of cardio, strength and flexibility segments and is tailored to fit each individual’s needs. Each participant is given a free 12 full YMCA membership and may use any of the Southington Community YMCA facilities during their hours of operation. Space is limited. OSTEOPOROSIS AND OSTEOPENIA FITNESS CLASSES—Southington Community YMCA is offering classes for people with Osteoporosis or Osteopenia. Classes are for all fitness levels and help improve balance, build strength, and lengthen the spine. Classes follow the Meeks Method, a safe and effective method which emphasizes the reversal of postural change. YMCA trainers work in conjunction with Community Physical Therapy. PRESCHOOL & YOUTH GYMNASTICS—For children ages 16 months and up in a state-of-the-art facility located at 26 Putnam Place, Plantsville.
