To the editor:

Congratulations to Coach Tony and the SHS Boy’s Tennis Program. What an amazing accomplishment for this group of players to not only capture a winning season but also provide Coach Tony with his 100th match victory.

It’s all about team for Coach Mauro, but 100 wins is a personal accomplishment to be recognized and applauded. Coaching at the high school level is a year-round occupation. Coaches of this era are required to pass courses, acquire certifications, and attend off season meetings.

Given that this man is an ageless 39-year-old, one can only hope to have half as much stamina and patience. Special thanks also to the coach’s wife, Sylvia, who along with Tony sweated for hours on end at yearly summer camps, passing their love of the game on to countless Southington children, many who grew to play for him at the high school level.

A true local tennis icon. Here’s to the next 100.
