Southington Bread for Life will be hosting its third annual Help End Hunger Walk on Saturday, June 13 on the Rails to Trails walking trail in downtown Southington. This event is a collaborative effort between Bread for Life, Southington Community YMCA, LEAF CT, Activate Southington and Bobby Sprocket bike shop.
People are welcome to walk one mile any time between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the Rails to Trails. The start is at the YMCA, Mill Street entrance. The trail is stroller and wheelchair accessible. This walk is free but donations are welcome to feed the hungry of Southington.
“We invite the community to join us so that ‘no one may go hungry’ in our town,” said Eldon Hafford, executive director of Bread for Life.
Special activities include the LEAF CT Farmer’s Market, Valentine the Clown, and music. There will also be a drawing for a hybrid bike, half share CSA from LEAF CT, and a six-month adult YMCA membership. Tickets will be on sale starting at 9 a.m. with the drawing at 1 p.m. The winner does not have to be present at the drawing.
In 2014, Bread for Life served more than 35,900 meals to qualified clients. Walk sponsorships opportunities help fill that need with 100 percent of funds used to feed the hungry in Southington. Levels are: $1,000 Hunger Warrior (provides 335 hot meals delivered to the homebound friends who qualify); $500 Hunger Champion (provides 165 breakfasts to children in Southington Schools who otherwise would start the day without nourishment); and $250 Hunger Hero (provides 85 hot lunches to qualifying citizens at the weekday lunch program at Friendship Lodge on Main Street).
The Help End Hunger Walk will take place rain or shine and is a dog-free event. Registration can be completed before the walk by visiting www.southingtonbreadforlife.com or by calling (860) 276-8389.
