Kelley Elementary School has been ranked number 43 out of over 7,000 schools participating in the annual St. Jude Math-A-Thon.
For this fundraiser, students in grades K-8 ask family and friends for a pledge to solve math problems in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon Funbook, with all proceeds donated to the children’s research hospital.
According to officials at St. Jude, the Math-A-Thon has been the largest education-based fundraiser in the United States for over 35 years, and Kelley Elementary School has been helping the cause since 1994.
Kelley School set this year’s fundraising goal at $10,000, but surpassed it with an impressive total of $13,700.
“We were blown away by this number and quite proud, to say the least,” said Denise Sadowski, third grade teacher and Math-A-Thon coordinator at the school.
Before starting this year’s fundraising, Sadowski said the students had extra encouragement when the school received a letter from St. Jude, congratulating them for a ranking in the top 100 schools.
“Students know that the research done at St. Jude’s is shared around the world, which in turn saves thousands of children,” said Sadowski. “They know every dollar makes a difference.”
