Southington Library announces May events for adults

The Southington Public Library has announced a number of adult programs for May. If registration is required, contact the library at (860) 628-0947, ext. 6552 or visit www.SouthingtonLibrary.org, click on Calendar.

What is Hospice Volunteering? Thursday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m. Learn about the pioneers of hospice care, the hospice team approach to care, the individuals serves, and the responsibilities of hospice volunteers. Holly Beck, Volunteer Coordinator with Hartford HealthCare at Home, formerly VNA HealthCare, will present this free program. Everyone is welcome, but registration is required.

GMO Bootcamp: Knowledge for Your Health. Tuesday, May 12, 6:30 p.m. Learn about GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) in food. What are they? What are the potential health risks? How and why they are in our food. Identifying GMOs, and reading labels. Melissa Talarico, Hartford County Grassroots Leader with ConnFACT.org, will give the presentation. Health Benefits of the Mediterranean Diet & Lifestyle. Monday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. Learn all about foods and a way of life that is a great way to manage your weight and improve your health. This thoroughly studied lifestyle which involves foods and activities is noted to be one of the healthiest in the world, utilized by many in Europe. Free samples of a Mediterranean-style salad recipe will be provided by ShopRite of Southington. The presenter will be Kailee Conrad, Southington ShopRite Registered Dietitian. Registration is required.

Do you love someone with dementia? Caring for the Caregiver. Tuesday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. or Friday, May 22 at 10 a.m. Is your life affected by someone living with dementia? Family members and friends can easily become overwhelmed in their new role as “care-giver.” The Alzheimer’s Resource Center will explore the struggles and hopes for dementia care giving and focus on ways to support well-being. Free resources including classes, support groups, coaching and counseling services will be highlighted for Southington residents through a grant from the Barnes Memorial Trust. Registration is required.

Lefora Author Showcase. Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. Lefora is a group of writers whose mission is to publish new literature, including fiction, poetry, memoir, and criticism, with a focus on contributions that best serve to enhance and represent the intellectual life of the New England region. Lefora seeks to support a vibrant community of writers by stewarding writers through the editorial and marketing process, working with emerging talent as well as seasoned writers, sharing in the development of their careers, hosting an online journal, sponsoring writing contests, offering speaking opportunities, and they will do each of these as they create the Lefora Publishing legacy. Lefora members and area authors will share in this showcase, including David Fortier, Frank DeFrancesco, Chuck Radda, and Dawn Leger. Registration is required.
