Artist creates t-shirt for museum shop

The New Britain Museum of American Art (NBMAA) is increasing its creative collaboration with young, innovative artists by featuring Gordon Holden’s original merchandise in the Museum Shop. Expanding its list of trend-setting contributors, which also includes the Hartford Denim Company, this new partnership proves to add originality and inspiration to the dynamic character of the NBMAA. Holden created a unique design specifically for the museum products and continues to produce exciting works that embody humor, contemporary artwork, and culture.

A New England artist born in the American suburbs, Holden sells t-shirts at the hip fashion establishment OAK, which has two prominent locations in New York City. Frequented by young crowds who value individuality and expression, OAK boasts having celebrities such as Miley Cyrus modeling their original designs.

The NBMAA commission combines Holden’s one-of-a-kind style with the museum’s long-lived American art traditions, creating products that mix Holden’s playful curiosity with his cynical observations; whimsical and thought provoking creations. The t-shirts, mugs, and postcards he has designed for the Museum Shop dovetail with this mantra.

Holden uses art to express his vision by creating works to oppose culture’s insatiable drive for flawlessness. He often uses the viewer’s sense of sight and touch in his artistic expressions, employing a backwards mishmash of an osmosis of pop culture and personally derived abstract apprehension. Holden’s intense appreciation for the Museum’s art drives the inspiration behind his designs. The t-shirt featured on his website ( and in our merchandise shop is named “Positively Breath Taking,” after his experience at the NBMAA.

Gordon Holden’s items are currently available in the Museum Shop and range in price from $4–$38.
