Obituary: Joseph Abagis, 52

Joseph Abagis, 52, of Port Orange, Fla., the beloved husband of Marie Breault Abagis, passed away on Monday, Jan. 2 after a brief illness.

Joe was a former Southington resident and graduated with the Class of 1982. He was the son of Sylvia Liskosky Spaulding; his late step-father Bernie Spaulding; and his late father, Robert Abagis.

Joe served in the U.S. Army with the 10th Mountain Division during Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti. After serving in the army, Joe earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Central Connecticut State University, a degree in respiratory therapy from Florida University, and his master’s degree from Norwich University in Vermont. He was currently employed at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center as a respiratory therapist, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Besides his wife and mother, Joe leaves behind his sisters, Carol Welch and husband Daniel of Southington; Helen Fusco and husband Thomas of Peru, N.Y.; brother, Robert Abagis of Peru, N.Y.; and mother-in-law Susan Breault of Port Orange, Fla. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, all who enjoyed any moment they could spend with Uncle Joe.

Joe will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved him. No one ever could convey their love like Joe through the many hugs he gave his loved ones.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held in Port Orange, Fla. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
