Local theater troupe brings holiday spirit to stage

Southington Community Theatre is ready to put you in the holiday spirit this weekend.

The local theater troupe will present “Home for the Holidays” on Saturday.

Director Brandi Sabato explained, “’Home for the Holidays’ is our annual variety show that includes musical performances both by individuals and the whole cast, holiday-themed skits, and instrumental performances. Our audience members can expect to be entertained by singing, acting and dancing all rooted in the holiday and seasonal theme of the show.”

Many theater companies will put on a Christmas play, such as “A Christmas Carol” or “It’s a Wonderful Life.” But Sabato said SCT has “had great success in past years producing this variety show, and we have found that, while people enjoy traditional Christmas plays and productions, a variety show that incorporates not only Christmas, but other winter holidays as well as the overall joy of the season, is more inclusive and opens us up to a wider audience.”

Sabato added, “I would also say that sometimes people who aren’t tried and true theatergoers can be intimidated by attending a traditional theatrical production, so we are producing a variety show in the hope that it will be more approachable to those who may not frequent community, regional or professional theatre regularly.”

Besides that, said Sabato, “Home for the Holidays” is “also a really lively, fun show that provides an opportunity for many different performers to have their chance in the spotlight.”

To find its cast for the show, Sabato said SCT turned to the web to help in its search.

“Over the course of the past year or so, we have really worked hard to increase our presence on social media, particularly Facebook,” said Sabato. “We have increased our followers there, and have been using our page to post audition and casting announcements.”

“We had a great response to our open casting call for this show, and we have performers from all over the state joining us for this production, which we are really excited about,” said Sabato.

“This year’s cast is comprised of many newcomers to SCT, as well as some familiar faces from past productions and last year’s holiday show,” said Sabato, who is sharing directing duties with Amanda Savio (Peter E. Pristic is producing.)

“This year’s show will not disappoint (audiences),” said Sabato. “We have a special appearance by Santa Claus himself during the show, two acts chock full of seasonal and holiday favorites as well as some new material that’s never been seen before.”

Plus, said Sabato, “We are also really excited to bring back our intermission raffle this year, where we will be raffling off some great prize items donated by organizations and businesses including Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Wheeler YMCA, ZING Fitness Zumba, Tavern 42, ESPN and many more. In addition, for the first time, we’ll be running a 50/50 raffle during intermission as well, so there will be a lot of excitement over the course of the entire evening.”

“We are so grateful for the support we receive from the community throughout the year, and while this show serves as a major fundraiser event for us each year,” said Sabato, “we see this as an opportunity for us to give back to our audience and community, too, by delivering a message of hope, joy and togetherness.”

“Home for the Holidays” will be presented Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Derynoski Elementary School, 240 Main St., Southington, CT. Tickets are $15 ($10 for children 12 and under). Tickets will be available at the door only. Cash and credit/debit cards accepted. (Cash/ credit/ debit is also acceptable for regular raffle purchases. The 50/50 is cash only.)
