Football: Vance Upham led Southington with four touchdowns in a 47-20 victory over Cheshire (6-4) in the 23rd annual Apple Valley Classic at home. Upham finished the game with 212 yards rushing on 26 carries and broke the single season and career Southington rushing record, passing out Vinny Clements by finishing the regular season with 178 carries for 1,605 yards. Upham was also named the Southington and Cheshire Chamber of Commerce Apple Valley Outstanding Player of the Game. Joe Koczera won the most valuable defensive player award for Southington with five tackles and a fumble recovery. Matt Nugent won the most valuable defensive player award for Cheshire. Barmore won the most valuable offensive player award for Southington, completing 16 of 29 passes for 272 yards. Jack Raba won the most valuable offensive player award for Cheshire, completing 23 of 39 passes for 171 yards. The victory knocked the Rams out of playoff contention and marked the fifth consecutive win in the series for the Knights. Cheshire had won the previous five meetings from 2007 to 2011. Southington finished the regular season with its third-straight unbeaten regular season at 10-0 overall and secured a CIAC Class LL quarterfinal home game. The Knights will enter the state tournament as the No. 4 seed and host No. 5 Norwich Free Academy (8-2).
