These are the results for Southington High School’s varsity contests for Friday, Nov. 4. For more in-depth coverage, read next week’s Southington Observer.
Cross Country: Mark Murdy (17:08) and Conner Leone (17:22) represented the Blue Knights as the only Southington runners to compete in the state open at Wickham Park in Manchester. Murdy finished 56th overall out of 177 runners, and Leone wasn’t far behind in 74th. Staples (61, 1:21:43) won the boys open, followed by Danbury (77, 1:22:26) as the runner-up and Xavier (165, 1:24:24) in third. Ridgefield (122, 1:41:10) won the girls open, followed by Tolland (130, 1:39:13) as the runner-up and Glastonbury (140, 1:41:45) in third.
Football: Anthony Plantamuro and his three receiving touchdowns helped Southington remain undefeated with a 47-21 victory at East Hartford (4-4), as the Blue Knights have now scored over 40 points for the seventh time this season. The Knights led the Hornets, 27-6, at halftime, but 20 points in the second half helped Southington pull away. Plantamuro finished with five catches for 155 yards, intercepting a pass and forcing a fumble on defense as well. Vance Upham rushed for 228 yards and a pair of scores on 26 carries, finishing with 13 tackles, including nine assists, on defense. Will Barmore completed 13 of 17 passes for 241 yards and four touchdowns. Ian Hall anchored the defense with 15 tackles, including 11 assists and a fumble recovery. Shaun Wagner (interception), Anthony Plantamuro (force fumble), and Tyson Harris (blocked kick) contributed as well. Southington is currently 8-0 overall and in first place in Class LL.
Girls Volleyball: The fourth-seeded Lady Knights were eliminated from the CCC tournament after suffering a 3-0 loss (25-19, 25-17, 25-20) to top-seeded Farmington (18-0) in the semifinals at Avon High School. Kelly Kritz (6 digs) paced the offense with seven kills. Morgan Raymond (10 digs, 4 kills) went 10-for-11 serving with three aces. Stephanie Zera (9 digs, 1 block) went 10-for-11 behind the service line with a pair of aces and dished out 20 assists. Erica Bruno (2 kills) and Hannah Zelina (5 kills, 3 digs) attacked the net, each with two blocks. Nolyn Allen anchored the defense with 12 digs. Following the win over Southington, Farmington had yet to drop a single set all season long, including the CCC tournament, until entering the conference championship match against No. 2 RHAM (17-1). The Indians not only dropped a set against the Sachems, but they were swept, 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 28-26).
