A tie against Conard snapped Southington’s eight game winnings streak, and a loss to Avon was the first since late September. The Lady Knight soccer team stumbled a bit last week, but at 10-4-1 (1-3-1 in the division), the Knights still have a shot at a home contest.
Southington will try to build momentum this week with a home game against NW Catholic on Nov. 1.
Southington looked to avenge their loss in the season opener when they hosted the Chieftains on Tuesday, but the Knights had to settle for their first tie of the season. Still, the 2-2 tie stretched their unbeaten streak to nine games.
Not even a minute into the contest, Natalie Verderame put up the first point on the scoreboard with a goal on a breakaway. Conard responded with a goal midway through the first half. The Chieftains took the lead with a goal early in the second half, but Verderame scored her second goal of the game moments later off of a rebounded shot by Nikki Carter to knot up the score even at 2-2.
Southington took 12 shots on goal and four corner kicks. Janelle Mangassarian saved seven of Conard’s 10 shots on goal.
A few days later, Avon finally ended Southington’s torrid streak, outlasting the Knights for a 1-0 win.
Avon scored their lone goal of the game at the 34th minute of the second half. The Knights took six shots on goal and two corner kicks. Mangassarian saved 14 of Avon’s 18 shots on goal.
