Looking for a great opportunity to give trail running a try, especially if you’re fresh off one of Connecticut’s many fall road races? The Southington YMCA and CT Trailmixers are hosting the Fall Fling trail runs on Sunday, Nov. 13 at YMCA Camp Sloper.
Runners can choose many options, including a 6-hour, a 400 minute run, a 40-minute ultra run, or a 5K run. A one-mile kids run is also available.
The 40-minute run trail includes a technical two-mile trail loop with moderately rolling hills. Parts of the course are covered with rocks and roots, while other sections are smoother. Total elevation gain for each loop is approximately 275 feet.
The course will be marked. 400-minute run participants will complete as many two-mile loops as they’d like within the six-hour timeframe.
5k participants will run one loop of a separate course at Camp Sloper that combines some of the same trails with hills, fields, and woods. One-mile kids run participants will run one trail loop around the pond.
The two-mile loop will start and finish at the main pavilion at Camp Sloper. You’ll need to check in with a volunteer at the end of each loop so the attendants can track how many loops you complete. Runners will have access to traditional basic trail ultra food, such as fruit, potatoes, chips, candies, cookies, water and electrolyte replacement liquid. If you have specific nutritional needs, please bring your own stuff. You’ll be able to keep a drop bag at the pavilion.
Register online by Sunday, Nov. 6 (www.ultrasignup.com). Check-in starts at 6:30 a.m. on the day of the event, and participants are asked to arrive by 7:30 a.m. Costs range from $15 to $25 with discounts for early registration. Kids runs are free.
