Obituary: Marie Rizk Forgione, 86

obit-marie-forgioneMarie Rizk Forgione, 86, of Southington passed away on October 27, 2016 after a short illness.  Marie was born in Waterbury on January 10, 1930, the youngest daughter of Salim and Muneera Haddad Rizk.  Shortly after her birth the family moved to Southington where Marie attended local schools, graduating from Lewis High School in 1948.  She attended Becker College in Massachusetts and was the first member of her family to graduate from college.

Marie married Alphonse W. Forgione on Aug. 11, 1952.  They purchased a home on Main Street and in May 1955 moved it to Forgione Drive.  There they spent many happy years until Alphonse’s untimely death on November 19, 1972.

In 1969 Marie opened the Carousel Gift Shop on Main Street.  Eventually Marie added a breakfast and lunch counter to the Carousel.  She was happiest when she was behind the counter kibitzing with her friends and customers.  Marie sold the Carousel in 1981, and a year later went to work for the State of Connecticut in the payroll department, retiring in June 1995.  Freed from the responsibility of running her own business she enjoyed spending her vacation time at the beach in New London or Niantic with her friends and family.  She was also very active in town life, particularly with the Southington Apple Festival Chorale.

Marie is survived by many nieces and nephews, including Pascal D. Forgione (Kaye) of Austin, Texas, Leila (Mike) Thorne of NY, NY, Linda Shakkour Lane (Robert) of Greensboro, NC, Camille (Maureen) Shakkour of Huntington Beach, CA, Elaine Maynard Adams of New London and Peter (Karen) Shakkour of NY, NY.  She was also the loving great aunt of Jennifer Adams of Warwick, RI, Robert and Katherine Lane of Chicago, IL, Maureen (Scott) Barmore of Southington, Michael (Arzu) Forgione of Southington, Christina (Gary) Coles of Southington, Stephen (Marla) Forgione of Southington, Andrea (Aaron) Katz of Boston, MA, Geoffrey (Michelle) Forgione of CA, David Forgione of PA and Jeremy Forgione of Avon.  She is also survived by her caregiver and dear friend, Nina Kotiashvili.  She was predeceased by her sisters and best friends, Louisa Shakkour and Lila Maynard, niece Maurene Maynard McCredie and nephews Henry Forgione and Sami Shakkour.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 31, 2016 at 10:15 am from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. to St. Thomas Church, 99 Bristol St. at 11 am for a Mass. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Sunday, Oct. 30th from   4-6 pm ??
