In their lone meet of the week, the Lady Knight swimming and diving team improved their winning streak to three with an 85-79 divisional victory over Newington at home on Wednesday, Oct. 19. Southington clinched the win with three events remaining in the meet.
The Knights also celebrated senior night at Wednesday’s meet and the following seniors were recognized: Abby Alfieri, Jade Cassidy, Julianna Ferreri, Laura Furtak, Kailey Hinckley, Sam Martins, Sarah Mirisola, Julia Mularczyk, Jill Noli, Madison Osakowicz, Jess Piotrowski, Alexyss Roderick, Sam Sagnella, Kerry Buchanan (captain), Katie Estell (captain), Evelyn Holbrook (captain), Hannah Olsen (captain).
Olivia Fournier was a double winner in the 100 freestyle (54.13) and 100 backstroke (1:07.84), improving her state-qualifying time in the 100 freestyle.
Other first-place individual performances included Piotrowksi in the 200 individual medley (2:29.96); Olsen in the 50 freestyle (27.09); Sagnella in the 100 fly (1:08.50); Buchanan in the 500 freestyle (5:44.76); and Patrycja Zajac in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.21).
Southington grabbed first-place finishes in all three relays as well. Those performances included Piotrowski, Zajac, Sagnella, and Fournier in the 200 medley relay (2:06.26); and Olsen, Hinckley, Ferreri, and Buchanan in the 200 freestyle relay (1:53.96), and Buchanan, Piotrowksi, Holbrook and Fournier in the 400 freestyle relay (4:08.33).
Buchanan (200 freestyle); Mularczyk (50 freestyle); Piotrowski (100 fly); and Cassidy, Olsen, Estell, and Ferreri (200 medley relay) contributed with second-place finishes.
Southington is currently 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the CCC South White Division (5-2 in the CCC South Region). The following Knights are currently qualified in their respective events for the state meet: Fournier (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle), Buchanan (500 freestyle, 200 freestyle), Zajac (100 breaststroke), Osakowicz (diving), and Olsen (50 freestyle).
The Knights will have one last chance to qualify swimmers for the Class LL meet this week when they travel to Berlin for their regular season finale on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
