These are the results for Southington High School’s varsity contests from Monday, Oct. 10—Friday, Oct. 14. For more in-depth coverage, read next week’s Southington Observer.
Cross Country: Southington traveled to Elizabeth Park in West Hartford for their final meet of the regular season. The boys team defeated Bulkeley, 20-43, and Hartford Public and New Britain, 15-50. Jordan McMeans (17:51) marshaled the Blue Knights with a second-place finish. Ryan Slesinski (18:08), Adam Theriault (18:10), Matt Penna (18:28), and Sean Young (18:42) contributed as well. The girls team defeated Bulkeley, 17-46, Hartford Public, 15-50, and New Britain, 20-43. Catherine Myers (21:34) paced the Lady Knights with a second-place performance. Natalia Adamczyk (21:40), Laini Pizzitola (22:17), Amanda Perkowski (22:54), and Maggie Meehan (23:02) contributed as well. Both teams finished the regular season at 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the CCC Central Blue Division (3-2 in the CCC Central Region).
Field Hockey: Southington hosted Canton (4-7) on Tuesday in their first out-of-conference game of the season and fell short, 7-1. Alexa Zborowski scored the lone goal of the game for the Lady Knights midway through the first half on an assist by Nicole Martocchio. Southington suffered their fourth-straight loss, 2-0, at Hall (5-4-1) on Friday. The Knights finished the week at 2-9 overall.
Football: Southington took this past week off with a bye, but the Blue Knights will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 21 when they host Conard (3-2) at home. Southington is currently 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the CCC Division I West, ranked second in Class LL.
Boys Soccer: Southington qualified for the Class LL tournament for the second-straight season with a 3-2 win at Bulkeley (1-9-1) on Tuesday. The Blue Knights qualified for last year’s state tournament for the first time since 2010, advancing to the second round as a No. 12 seed, eventually falling to No. 28 Bridgeport Central, 4-0. Colin Burdette paced Southington with a pair of goals, including the game-winning goal late in the second half. The Knights hosted Farmington (9-1-1) on Friday and fell short, 1-0. Southington finished the week at 6-4-1 overall.
Girls Soccer: Southington qualified for the Class LL tournament with a 5-0 shutout over Bulkeley-Weaver (0-9-1) on Tuesday. This is the first time the Lady Knights qualified for the state tournament since 2013 when the team was a No. 28 seed. It was also the first time Southington clinched a playoff berth in Mike Linehan’s tenure (3 years) as head coach of the program. Taylor Hubert paced the Knights with a pair of goals. Southington wrapped up the week by earning their sixth-straight win in dramatic fashion with a thrilling 1-0 victory at Farmington on Friday. Emma Panerella scored the game-winning goal with 1:41 remaining in the contest. Southington has recorded shutouts in all eight of their wins thus far on the year. The Knights finished the week at 8-3 overall.
Girls Swimming & Diving: Southington ended their two-meet losing streak with a 90-69 victory at Plainville on Tuesday. Olivia Fournier qualified for her fourth event in the Class LL meet with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle (2:00.87). Madison Osakowicz plunged into first place off of the diving board with a score of 163.00, becoming the first female Southington diver to qualify for the state meet since Tia Jones in 2013. The Lady Knights returned home on Friday and capped off the week with a 90-72 victory over Farmington. Kerry Buchanan qualified for her second event in the state meet with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle (2:07.88). Hannah Olsen qualified for her first event in the state meet by finishing second in the 50 freestyle (26.66). Fournier improved her state-qualifying times in the 50 freestyle (24.88) and 100 freestyle (54.62). Southington finished the week at 6-2 overall.
Girls Volleyball: Southington traveled to Springfield, Mass. on Monday and competed against 24 teams in the VolleyHall Classic at the International Volleyball Hall of Fame, falling short in the semifinals of the Bronze Bracket. The Lady Knights finished off the week with a 3-0 shutout over Bristol Eastern (10-3) at home on Thursday and a 3-1 win at Avon (10-3) on Friday. With the win over Bristol Eastern, the Lady Knights earned a playoff berth and qualified for the Class LL tournament for the 14th-consecutive year. Southington advanced to the semifinals of last year’s state tournament for the first time since 2012 as a No. 3 seed, eventually falling to No. 10 Greenwich, 3-0. Also, setter Stephanie Zera achieved her 1,000th assist. Southington finished the week at 9-3 overall.
