The Southington Chamber of Commerce and the Southington Public Library are hosting a “meet and greet” event for voters to meet local candidates for the state senate and house races. The candidate forum is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m., in the library and is open to the public.
Jeanne Chmielewski, Publicist/Adult Program Coordinator for the Southington Public Library, said in a press release, “The candidates will each make a short statement and will then participate in a casual question and answer session.”
Southington Observer editor John Goralski, Editor for The Southington Observer, will be moderating the discussion.
Susan Smayda, Executive Director of the Southington Library, said that people who attended the community forum said they wanted a place where people could be more engaged in the town.
“It’s a great idea,” said Smayda. “Calendar House decided not to host it, so we decided to.”
Chamber of Commerce executive director Elizabeth Hyatt said that representatives from local businesses will be present at the forum. “It’s important for businesses to interact and express what they want and need,” she said.
Hyatt said that the chamber hopes to have the business community and the community as a whole come out for an interactive evening.
“It is a casual setting,” said Hyatt, “so people have the opportunity to get direct communication with the candidates.”
Ryan Rogers (D) and Joe Markley (R), both running for the 16th district state senate seat will be present, along with seven State Representative candidates.
House majority leader Joe Aresimowicz, (D-30th district) and his 18-year-old Republican challenger Christopher Morelli will be present. Robert Sampson (R) will represent the 80th district). David Zoni (D-81st District) and his Republican challenger John Fusco will be on hand, as well as Liz Linehan (D) and Andrew Falvey (R), who are both running for the open 103rd district seat.
