Spikers lose season opener

volleyball-shsThe Lady Knight volleyball team began last season with three consecutive wins and picked up an early victory over NW Catholic last year, but the Knights wouldn’t be as fortunate this fall.

On Friday, Sept. 9, the girls suffered a 3-1 loss in their season opener. Southington took the first set, but went on to drop the next three.

Hannah Zelina (4 blocks) powered the offense eight kills on 15 attacks. Erica Daigle (17 assists) went 21-for-21 with four aces. Megan Mahon (6 kills, 5 digs) led the charge up front with four blocks and dished out 19 assists. Morgan Raymond (7 kills) anchored the defense with 12 digs.

The loss in the season opener was Southington’s first in over a decade.

The Knights will look to get back on track this week with matches against Conard (0-1), RHAM (1-0), and Platt.
