The 48th annual Apple Harvest Festival is scheduled on two weekends, Friday, Sept. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 1 and Friday, Oct. 7 to Sunday, Oct. 9. The annual, family-oriented event attracts an estimated 100,000 visitors annually to the town green. The festival offers a wide variety of live music and entertainment, food, contests, crafts, children’s activities, carnival rides, and more.

“GRANNY APPLE” ESSAY CONTEST—Essays must be submitted by Sept. 21. Who’s got the best “Granny” in Southington? The Apple Harvest Festival Committee invites Southington residents in grades 4-6 to nominate their grandmothers for a chance to be chosen as the “Granny Apple” of this year’s Festival. Essays in student’s handwriting should say why their grandmother is so special to them and why they think she should be the “Granny Apple.” The winning student and their grandmother will have the opportunity to ride in the Festival parade on Oct. 2. APPLE HARVEST BED RACE—Saturday, Oct. 1. 12:30 p.m. judging on Center Street. 2 p.m. races on Main Street, in front of the First Congregational Church. Teams will compete in groups of two in categories determined by weight. Gift cards will be awarded to the top three places. The overall champion will also receive a trophy. All races are sponsored by the Southington Community YMCA. Forms are available for pre-registration (by Oct. 1 at noon) at the YMCA membership desk. All race info and on-line registration info can be found at sccymca.org/apple. Register by Sept. 19 to receive a free t-shirt. Plenty of refreshments for athletes with music on the course. Race day registration from 7 a.m.-8 a.m. Pre-race packages will be available on Friday, Sept. 30 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 1 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at the YMCA. 5 MILE ROAD RACE—Sunday, Oct. 2, 8:30 a.m., beginning on Columbus Blvd. Race divisions: 10-15, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80+, and Military. Awards will be presented for the first Southington male and female (Dave Gworek Memorial Award) and the first SHS soccer player (Chris Sanchez Memorial Award). Cost is $22 ($27 on race day). Discounted price for active military members is $17.
5K ROAD RACE—Sunday, Oct. 2, 8:45 a.m., beginning on Columbus Blvd. Race divisions: 8-10, 11-13, 14-16, 17-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80+, and Military. Cost is $22 ($27 on race day). Discounted price for active military members is $17.
2 MILE WALK—Sunday, Oct. 2, 8:30 a.m., on the Southington rail trail. Walk starts in front of the YMCA. Cost is $10 ($15 on race day).
THE Y CUP—Sunday, Oct. 2, 8:45 a.m., beginning on Columbus Blvd. Three-member relay teams for the 5K race is open to boys and girls in grades 4 and 5. Registration will be available at Southington elementary schools in September.
LITTLE FRITTER FUN RUNS—Sunday, Oct. 2 immediately following the road race, at the Town Green. Variety of kids (2 to 7 years old) races run around the town green. Cost is $10 ($15 on race day).
