Registration is underway for the annual Apple Harvest Festival bed race to be held on the first weekend of the festival.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1. Beds will be reviewed and judged on Center Street at 12:30 p.m. Races will begin at 2 p.m. on Main Street, in front of the First Congregational Church.

Bed racing teams will compete head-to-head in groups of two. Places will be determined by overall times, with a championship heat between the top two qualifying teams.

“We are looking for bed racing enthusiasts to put on a show,” officials said in a press release. “You can win a little cash and, of course, bragging rights as the fastest racing bed in Southington.”

The beds will compete in categories determined by weight. Gift cards will be awarded to the top three places. The overall champion will also receive a trophy.

In addition, plaques will be awarded for the categories of “Most Original Bed Design” and “Best Decorated Bed/Team.”

“This event is open to civic groups, community organizations, volunteer groups or anyone who just wants to get in on the fun and excitement of bed racing,” officials said in the release.

Beds must have all four wheels touching the ground, and the bed must have a passenger who is seat-belted on the bed. Each bed must have a mattress and handlebars or some sort of steering mechanism, which can be no wider than the width of the bed.
