The Observer welcomes Jen Cardines as our new staff writer for Southington news.
Jen grew up in the region. She graduated from Newington High School and is a recent graduate from Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), where she studied English and social studies. Her coursework focused on writing, sociology, economics, and psychology.
As a student at CCSU, Jen was a regular contributor and intern with Odyssey Online Magazine.
She was active in her community as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and as a volunteer intern where she assisted faculty and students at an area middle school.
Jen was also active on the CCSU campus, where she served as music director for the AcaBellas, an all-female a cappella group.
“We are very excited to welcome Jen to the Southington Observer staff,” said Observer editor John Goralski. “She was the perfect fit for our community newspaper, and that was very clear with her recent coverage of the Italian-American Festival.”
Readers may already be familiar with her work. Jen has already been working as a freelance writer for the Southington, Bristol, and Plainville Observers, and her observations at the Italian-American Festival helped to spotlight the Italian Rosary Society, an important local group that hadn’t received a lot of attention for their continued efforts at the annual event.
“Her work has already shown a strong attention to detail and a colorful use of language,” Goralski said. “The way she embraced the community during her past assignments really helped set her apart from a talented pool of candidates.”
Jen will be covering local news, business, politics, and community features throughout Southington, Plantsville, Milldale, and Marion.
She can be reached at JCardines@SouthingtonObserver.com.
