To the editor:

First we would like to thank you for the fine coverage you gave our recently completed 12th annual Southington Italian American Festival, sponsored by the Southington Sons of Italy, the Unico Club of Southington and the Sorelle D’Italia in America. It is certainly appreciated.

While the weather could have been better, we avoided a heat wave. We had many, many volunteers doing their part to make the festival such a great success especially our committee who have worked since January to work out all the details that are necessary to put on a festival of this type. A special thank to our sponsors who make it all possible with their generous donations. The festival would not be possible without them. Also our vendors who provide all the delicious food and the non-food vendors who display their goods and services certainly add a special touch.

We thank our priest Father Aniello who makes the trip from Waterbury to say our Italian mass and our own Father Melo of St. Thomas Church who assisted. Thanks to Deacon Angelo Coppola, The Italian Ladies Rosary Society, Deb Montana and the Euchurists Ministers, Sister Roccapriore, Ali’s Nursery and the Baker Family all of whom contributed to making our Italian Mass a showcase event. Thanks to our procession organizers, the Sam Vinci Band along with the Knights of Columbus, St. Dominic’s and other marchers who made the procession honoring The Maddona Della Strata a beautiful event. Thanks also go to our entertainers, many of whom volunteer their time and talent to make our show one of the best in the area. We appreciate the merchants on Center Street whose co-operation is very important in producing this festival in spite of some inconvenience to them; our outside contractors who worked on our electrical, rubbish disposal, sanitation, signage and printing; and our sound engineers Vinnie Morelli and Jerry Limmer who again supplied us with a high quality product under difficult conditions.

A sincere note of appreciation to Mr. Howard Schlesinger of the Meridian Corporation, who owns the property the festival is held on and to Mat Florian of Florian Properites for allowing the carnival to be held on his property. Needless to say, the festival owes them our thanks for letting us use their property and is a major reason the festival has been so successful

Last, but not least, the town agencies were outstanding in helping us. The police, fire, health and engineering departments made our job easier. A very special thank you to the parks and highway departments, their expertise and guidance proved invaluable to us. Thank you to the Parking Authority and Zoning Board of Appeals for their approval of our requests.

Finally, to all of you who attended the festival and supported us: thank you for your continued love and enthusiasm of our Italian-American Festival. We look forward to another great year in 2017.

Very truly yours,

Festival co-chairs Bob Triano (Sons of Italy); Tina Mennone (Sorelle D’Italia in America); Bob Tonan (Unico Club of Southington); and Joe LaPorte (Unico Club of Southington)
