The 10th annual Wayton Open tennis tournament wrapped up with championship matches at Southington High School on Sunday, July 17. A player’s breakfast kicked off the morning before matches began at 9 a.m. and lasted until the late afternoon.

Tournament director Matt Wayton, said that he felt the tournament ran well, a lot better than it did in past years. What helped most was the fact that there were no walkovers in the finals with all matches going off at the same time.

“We had seven going at once, and three more after those matches,” said Wayton. “Having them all on the same day where the weather cooperated with no rain was huge…You couldn’t ask for a better turnout.”

The tournament crowned three women’s champions. Bianka Horvath defeated Angela Hage (7-5, 6-1) in women’s singles. Robin Thompson-Lucille Hage edged Alex Barmore-Sam Barmore, 6-4, 6-2, in women’s doubles. Jasmine Nappi beat Ellie Doolittle, 6-1, 6-1, in the high school girls singles division.

Six titles were earned in the men’s brackets. Joe Albiach out-lasted Kunal Kataria, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4), to claim the men’s A singles title. Wayton defeated Prasanna Sahoo, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1, 6-1, to win the men’s B singles brackets. Rohn Heidgerd beat Jeff Blumberg, 6-1, 6-2, to win men’s masters. Eric Henne-Mark Habek defeated Chris Spear-Justin Kohut, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, in men’s A doubles. Wint Filipek-Stephen Barmore defeated Kevin Yawgel-Nick Loveland, 7-5, 6-2, in men’s B doubles. Joseph Delgado defeated James Delgado, 6-4, 7-6 (6), to claim the high school boys singles title.

Two coed tandems claimed trophies. Kunal Kataria-Angela Hage defeated Joe Albiach-Alex Barmore, 6-0, 6-4, to take the mixed A doubles title. In mixed B doubles, Winchester Brown-Opal Bravo defeated Rohan Kataria-Caroline Rodman, 6-2, 7-6 (4).

Of course, Wayton said that he is always looking to improve the tournament and one of the major changes he hopes to make for next year’s tournament includes going digital.

“I want to be way more digitally with the scheduling and calling,” said Wayton. “I want to make the schedule airtight and just throw it on the website. If they can’t make that time, they have to contact their opponent themselves. It saves me the headache and puts more of the emphasis on them.”

Wayton said that he also hopes to assemble a bigger staff to help him run the tournament.
