FUNDRAISERS

PAVERS FOR POSTERITY (BLUE KNIGHT BRICKS)—The Turf Committee is offering an opportunity to purchase bricks to help defray costs for the artificial turf field at Southington High School. Bricks cost $125 and can be engraved with three lines of type (14 characters per line). Bricks will be displayed as part of a walkway and patio at the entrance to the turf field complex. Bricks can be purchased at the Southington Chamber of Commerce, the Parks & Recreation Department, or at the Southington High School Athletic Department.

TOURNAMENTS

SOUTHINGTON ELKS GOLF TOURNAMENT—Friday, Aug. 12, 10 a.m. shotgun start, at Hawks Landing CC. Registration deadline is July 25. Proceeds benefit the Elks Lodge. Cost is $100 per golfer ($20 for dinner only). Three divisions. Contest prizes including a 2016 Buick hole-in-one prize. Sponsorships are available. Contact: Chair Ken Hill, (860) 276-8179.

ST JUDE HOSPITAL GOLF TOURNAMENT—Saturday, Oct. 1, 12:30 p.m. shot gun start at Hunter Golf Club. Cost is $100 per player. Hole sponsorships available for $75. Profits go to St. Jude Children’s research Hospital. Contact: Pete Montana, (860) 276-9018.

SPORTS CAMPS

FIELD HOCKEY CAMP—Monday, Aug. 15-Thursday, Aug. 18 (rain date Aug. 19) at Panthorn Park. Open to athletes in grades 5-12. No skills required to join. Beginners and advanced players are welcome. Cost is $120. Contact Sue Abacherli, (860) 877-2105 or mabacherli@cox.net for more information.

OSTEOPOROSIS AND OSTEOPENIA FITNESS CLASSES—Southington Community YMCA is offering classes for people with Osteoporosis or Osteopenia. Classes are for all fitness levels and help improve balance, build strength, and lengthen the spine. Classes follow the Meeks Method, a safe and effective method which emphasizes the reversal of postural change. YMCA trainers work in conjunction with Community Physical Therapy. SOUTHINGTON SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTION DINNER—Wednesday, Nov. 9, 6 p.m., at the Aqua Turf, Plantsville. The Southington Sports Hall of Fame will induct 6 athletes, one coach, one booster, and two teams as the Class of 2016. Athletes include Andy Liseo, Kim Lynch, Lisa Matukaitis, Ted Wallace, Jessica Gianatti, and Jimmie Savage. Former SHS coach Pete Sepko, and Southington booster Doug Topshe will be inducted, along with the 1986 SHS softball team and the 1994 SHS baseball team. Cost is $50. THE SPEEDWAY LINE REPORT WITH GARY DANKO—Mondays, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m., April-November, on WATR 1320 or on-line at www.speedwaylinereport.com. The call-in radio show focuses on the world of auto racing with in-studio guests.
