‘Mulan Jr.’ opens on Friday

The Southington Youth Summer Theater program opens its Disney-themed production calendar today, when curtains open for “Mulan, Jr.”

The summer program features youth from grades 6 to 12, and it’s focused on helping young thespians hone their craft through local productions. All shows will be held at the Southington High School auditorium, and tickets for all shows are $5.

Tickets are available through the Southington Recreation office at town hall, 75 Main St., and will be available at the door for each performance.

On Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16, at 7 p.m., the Footlights program will present the musical “Mulan Jr.,” based on the Disney animated film. Mulan disguises herself as a soldier in order to save her father and winds up saving the Emperor and all of China.

The show is directed by Alyssa Fontana Bunel and features students entering grades 6-8. Southington’s Grace Michaud will take on the title role.

On Friday, July 22, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, July 23, at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., the summer series will culminate with the Spotlights production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” based on the animated film. The tale follows Belle and the Beast, who is actually a prince that has been put under a spell by an enchantress. If he can learn to love and be loved the curse will end, but time is running out. The original Broadway production ran for over 13 years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, including “best musical.” The show is directed by Kristy Smith and features students entering grades 9-12.
