Calling all grandchildren, it’s almost time to nominate your “Granny” for the annual “Granny Apple” contest tradition.

If you have a grandmother who bakes the best apple pies, tells the best stories, or is just overall the best grandma in town, put a pen to paper and tell the town why.

The contest is an annual event in the Apple Harvest Festival (AHF) which will kick off on Sept. 30. Southington residents entering grades 4 to 6 this fall are welcome to submit essay nominations for their grandmothers.

In their own words, and handwriting, children are asked to explain why their grandmother is special to them and why they think she deserves the honor of “Granny Apple.” Entries must be no more than 150 words.

The winning student, and their granny, will ride in the AHF parade on Sunday, Oct. 2.

Essays must be submitted or postmarked by July 31 and sent to Apple Harvest Festival – Granny Apple Contest, PO Box 907, Southington, CT, 06489.

All entries should include the child’s full name, address, a daytime phone number for parents, and their grandmother’s full name.

A panel of judges will choose the “Granny Apple” for the 48th annual festival. Winners will be notified by phone.

For more information about the contest, contact ahfestival@southington.org or jnc181@cox.net.
