This year’s honorees in the YMCA Camp Sloper Hall of Fame have been announced—Lance Kilburn, Bob Lengyel, Nicki O’Rourke, and Mike Soccodato will be inducted on Wednesday, July 13 at the YMCA’s annual Volunteer and Donor Appreciation Picnic at Camp Sloper.
The Hall of Fame was created in 2005 to recognize past staff members and volunteers who have had an impact on the camp.
“Remembering our history is important to do,” said Director of Operations Mark Pooler. “These individuals and all the others in the Hall Of Fame have helped to make YMCA Camp Sloper what it is today.”
In the hall’s 10th annual award ceremony, Kiburn is being honored for his years of volunteer service as a Workday Volunteer and an Outdoor Center Committee member.
Lengyel, who ran the waterfront program for 9-years, will be recognized as “one of the all-time greatest Waterfront Directors” for the camp, according to the YMCA.
Staff member O’Rourke will be honored for spending several summers working as a camp counselor, a Unit Director, and After Care Director, and a Special Needs Coordinator.
Soccodata, known as “Iron Mike”, will be recognized as a counselor in the early 1990s who served as a member of the Outdoor Center Committee and Pond Management Subcommittee.
The appreciation picnic will be open to all staff, volunteers, and their families, who hope to cheer on this year’s inductees.
“This is a great tradition for our YMCA and the camp. What has made us so successful for many years are dedicated staff and volunteers,” said Pooler. “The four inductees in 2016 have made an incredible impact on our camp program and we are lucky to have had them as part of our team and family.”
