Library officials announced Morgan G. Cairns as the winner in the Ekphrastic Poetry Challenge. The announcement was made on May 12, during the meet the artists’ reception for Joanne Cyr and Starr Ertel’s “Friendship Exhibit” at the Southington Library Gallery.

The competition challenged teens to create a poem to describe a close up photograph of a peacock, on display in the library. Cairns won for her poignant poem, “Clear Eyes, Full Hearts.”

Cairns will be graduating from North Haven High School and plans to attend Providence College in the fall to major in creative writing. She has been writing since a very young age and attributes her love for writing to visiting many libraries throughout the years with her mother.

The Friendship Exhibit will continue through the month of May.

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts

Such vanity in your eyes;

such pride in the knowledge

of how different-

better-

you know yourself to be

compared to all the rest.

But iridescence and opulence

can only weigh you down.

I will not turn my head

for one last glance

when I soar away

on battered wings.
