To the editor:

As president of the Southington Band Backers I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the Southington community for its support of the Southington Marching Band and music education across the town.

In 2015, the Marching Band earned a second straight US Bands state championship for Southington. The students began working on the show in early spring and continued through the summer. Beginning in April, the students in pit, drumline and color guard rehearsed the highly complex rhythms, melodies, and choreography that would be their focus for the next seven months. They were joined by the entire band in late summer.

For two solid weeks, our band members spent the entire day drilling marching styles, memorizing their music, and putting the show on the field.

Last year’s show, “The Coven” based on Macbeth, was a truly magnificent show. Our Marching Band performed throughout the fall, competing every Saturday. These performances culminated with our first place win at the US Bands state championships in New Britain, and then at the national US Bands championships at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey, where Southington placed fourth.

The 23nd annual “Music of the Knight” competition in Southington was a huge success again. In addition to being the band’s largest fundraiser, having the opportunity to host one the largest and best Marching Band competitions in the state is a great source of pride to our students. Competitions like MOTK are a primary reason students are part of Marching Band.

As someone who believes that a quality music program is something we need to preserve and continue to strengthen in Southington, I thought what better community to reach out to than former Southington Band Backers and their families. We have a new opportunity for past Band Backers and their family’s to continue to support and strengthen the Southington Music program for years to come.

With your tax deductible annual donation to the Southington Band Backers, a 501c3 charity, you will be listed as a Band Backer Legacy Supporter in the Music of the Knight Program Guide and receive two MOTK tickets as our thank you.

You may choose from three Support levels.  Bronze Level $100, Silver Level $200, and Gold Level $300.  For more information or to pledge your support please contact me esemmel@cox.net.

On behalf of our students, band directors Sara Ossias, and Harrison Stuppler, marching band staff, and members of the Southington Band Backer organization, I wish to thank the residents and businesses of Southington who support this program throughout the year.

Erik Semmel, President, Southington Band Backers, Inc.
