Nearly 20 teams competed at the Southington Education Foundation’s community spelling bee in late April. The event was dedicated to the late Southington educator Joseph Cipollini and featured a performance by the CyberKnights robotics team.

Teams representing a variety of community and high school groups, and the event raised $5,00 for the Southington Education Foundation, as well as nonperishable donations for the Southington Community Food Bank.

The Rotary Club of Southington, featuring Kate Sirignano, Gloria Brown and Kris Noli, outlasted CyberKnights I in the finals to win the title. Thalberg Spellerz and the defending champions, Wanna Bees, rounded out the final four.

Since its inception in 2009, the Southington Education Foundation has provided approximately $200,000 in enrichment programs that foster educational excellence in the town’s public schools.
