To the editor:

My heart is breaking at the news of Joseph Cipollini’s passing. He was my son Ryan’s science teacher this year. I got to meet him only two times, but I could tell that my son was in good hands with Joe Cipolino.

His scholarship and good humor were clearly evident…two vital traits for a gifted teacher.

I, myself, have always loved teachers and professors, and they number among the most notable positive influences in my life to this day.

The good people of South Korea venorate teachers to the point where they pay them on par with doctors and lawyers. In addition, the South Korean language has a word that has no ready translation into English that speaks to this culture’s deep love and respect for teachers and their special profession.

I wish that I had had a chance to whisper this special word into Mr. Cipilino’s ear, just once.

May God bless Mr. Cipilino’s soul, along with all of his family at this terribly sad moment for the Southington School System and our entire grieving Community,

Sincerely,

Joseph “Joe” Shurkus, Plantsville
