Registration is underway for a Ben’s Run Run, a unique one-mile cross country race for boys and girls in grade 4 and 5 to be held on Saturday, May 28 at YMCA Camp Sloper.
The race is sponsored by YMCA Camp Sloper and Ben Was Here, Inc, will host Ben’s Fun Run, and offers young runners a chance to compete in a friendly setting. The event was inspired by the late Benjamin Buckly, a boy who passed away at just 7 years old due to severe asthma-related health issues.
“The strength the Buckley family has shown since the passing of Ben is remarkably inspiring,” said YMCA Director of Operations Mark Pooler. “They have turned every parent’s worst nightmare into something extremely positive. Being able to put this race on in memory of Ben is a privilege, and the YMCA is very honored to be part of this special event”
Race day registration will begin at 8 a.m. at Camp Sloper, and races will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the 5th grade boys race, followed by the 5th grade girls race at 8:45 a.m. The 4th grade boys (9 a.m.) and the 4th grade girls (9:15 a.m.) will round out the competition.
There is no cost to participate in the run; however, donations will be accepted for future trail improvements at YMCA Camp Sloper. Following the run, the Buckley Family will provide refreshments for all runners. Registration is now open and is limited to 250 runners.
“Our running club committee is honored that the Buckley family and the Southington YMCA have teamed up with us to celebrate the life of a special young boy,” said race director Bob Lasbury, “while also promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for the youth of our town.”
