Town seeks water pollution control operator

Town of Southington

The town is currently looking to fill a full time position for a Water Pollution Control Operator 1.

The position involves working in and around Advanced Waste Treatment facilities to clean and repair  sewer lines, complete maintenance work at the treatment plant and pump stations, and operate mechanical equipment.

A Control Operator 1 will perform a variety of routine tasks that follow standardized operating practices, following rules and procedures of the town.

Those interested in applying must have at least a high school diploma or GED, have a Connecticut Waste Water Operators 1 license, and be able to obtain a CT CDL Class 2 with tanker endorsement within one-year of being hired.

Applicants will be expected to have a working knowledge of pumps, motors, and other wastewater related equipment, and be able to take readings and monitor gauges, meters, and control panels.

The Control Operator 1 will also be required to collect sludge and water samples, complete simple lab tests, and be expected to drive and operate equipment such as a sewer jet/vac, rodders, fork lifts, and inspection vehicles.

Applicants should be available to work on-call on a rotating call system, to report for problems both inside and outside the plant, and to address any necessary road work.

Physical stamina and strength are necessary for this position, which requires lifting manhole covers, pumps, permanganate pails, and motors, weighing up to 50-pounds.

The ability to climb and descend ladders to manholes, tanks, and drywells is also necessary, and applicants should be prepared to work outside for long lengths of time in both extreme heat and cold weather.

The Control Operator 1 will work under the supervision of the Water Pollution Control foreman and will report to the Superintendent of Water Pollution Control, and should be prepared to assist supervisors with more complex tasks.

The position is affiliated with the  American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union – it is a full-time position with an hourly pay rate of $25.69.
