Wrestlers surge past New Britain

Eight pins and two forfeits earned the Blue Knights (12-3, 6-0) a 60-19 win over New Britain (4-16, 3-3) and the CCC West Division crown in their regular season finale at home on Wednesday, Feb. 10 on senior night.

The Knights mounted a 36-0 lead through the first six bouts on five pins and a forfeit. Tagan Welch (113), Shaun Wagner (120), Paul Calo (126), Austin Abacherli (132), Kyle Solomon (138), Logan LaRosa (160), Jason Calvi-Rogers (170), and Julian Robles (195) all landed pins in the match. Wagner recorded the fastest pin, just under a minute at 58 seconds. Robles scored the second-fastest pin at 1:06.

The Golden Hurricanes finished the match with two pins and a major decision.

Southington was scheduled to compete against other teams in the conference at the CCC Invitational on Saturday at Berlin High School, but decided not to make the trip.

The Knights turn their focus to the postseason now as they prepare for the Class LL state tournament at Trumbull High School on from Friday, Feb. 19 to Saturday, Feb. 20. Newtown is the defending champion.
