The late Steve Fernandes of Southington, a member of the first class of the Southington Sports Hall of Fame, is one of six Connecticut individuals to be inducted into the newly-formed Connecticut Wrestling Hall of Fame in April.
Fernandes was a Class LL champion in 1997 and was co-captain on Southington’s 1978 Class LL championship team. As a junior and a senior, the lightweight finished as the runner up at the state open.
After graduation, he went on to become a three-time NCAA Division III All-American and 1982 Division III national champion at Trenton State, now called the College of New Jersey. His overall high school and college record stands at 228-14-1.
He will be joined by Tony Gizio (NFA), Jim Guzzio (Hand), Brendan Harris (Somers), T.J. MarcAurele (NFA, Ledyard), and Stefenie Shaw (Waterford). They will be recognized on Saturday, April 16 at Aria’s in Prospect.
