Theater group considered one of best in state

Connecticut Theatre Company, was nominated as one of the best community theaters in Connecticut in the 2015 BroadwayWorld Connecticut Awards.  The site had a record number of voters and announced on Jan. 13, that Connecticut Theatre Company, in residence at the Repertory Theatre in New Britain, has been named “Best Community Theater Company.”

2015 was Connecticut Theatre Company’s second season of shows after being founded in December of 2013 through a merging of The Repertory Theatre and Bristol Theatre Arts. The company produces a full season of shows each year and offers educational opportunities through internships, classes and workshops.

In 2015, the group performed “Gypsy,” “Hairspray,” “Noises Off,” “Young Frankenstein,” and “White Christmas.” Over 120 actors, musicians and volunteers helped to make the season a success, said a press release from the group.

Executive Director Duane Campbell said in the press release, “We could not be successful without the support of the local arts community and our wonderful patrons. We believe Connecticut Theatre Company to be a family, and everyone who walks in the door are treated as such.”

In addition to their win as Best Community Theatre, local actors Peter Bailey (Bristol) and Stephen Michelsson (New Britain) were honored as Best Actor and Best Featured Actor respectively for their work in “Gypsy” at Connecticut Theatre Company.

What’s next for the group? President Erin Campbell stated in the press release, “We are so excited to be heading into our third season after the success of the previous two years. We have a wonderful selection of shows with something for everyone and we can’t wait to get more and more of the community out to see this gem right in New Britain.”

In 2016, Connecticut Theatre Company is producing six shows, “Arsenic and Old Lace,” “My Fair Lady,” “Once On This Island,” “Boeing Boeing,” “Sweeney Todd,” and “The Christmas Schooner.”
