To the editor:

It was shocking to me to hear that Councilman Christopher Palmieri has been removed as chair of the Southington Apple Harvest Festival Committee. Even worse, he was removed from membership on that committee.

It is inconceivable that his removal was the result of poor performance as chairman. Palmieri has been in large part responsible for the tremendous success of the festival since the time that responsibility for it was assumed by the town. He has worked tirelessly to improve the Apple Harvest Festival, year after year, and with obviously positive results.

Nor is it credible to respond that someone else should have a turn at the job. If that were true, there are a great many other changes in committee leadership and membership which would be taking place, but they are not.

Therefore, the only plausible conclusion is that Palmieri’s removal was a political maneuver. It is no coincidence that he has been the highest vote-getter in several recent election cycles. It is no wonder that the current Town Council leadership would desire to reduce the visibility to large numbers of people that his position provided.

Fortunately, the people of Southington are smart enough to see through this insult to their intelligence. If this decision is not reversed, it may have the opposite of its intended effect.

Edward Rosenblatt, Chairperson, Southington Democratic Town Committee
