The Hospital of Central Connecticut (HOCC) now also offers its Women’s Heart Wellness Center at the Bradley Memorial campus in Southington.
The center, part of the Department of Cardiology, is open 8 a.m. to noon on the first and third Wednesday of the month at the campus, 81 Meriden Ave. HOCC launched its Women Heart Wellness Center at its New Britain General campus in January 2013.
“Heart disease is all too common in women and with extension of our Women’s Heart Wellness Center in Southington we are looking forward to providing the community another service of great value and importance,” cardiologist Dr. Heather Swales, FACC, director of the Women’s Heart Wellness Center, said in a HOCC press release.
Those who visit the Women’s Heart Wellness Center, which specializes in cardiac care for women, are seen by a board-certified cardiologist. At the initial center appointment a patient will receive a gender-specific risk factor screening to address cardiac risk factors specific to women, symptom assessment and a physical exam. If necessary, tests will be ordered and followed by a personalized treatment plan.
Wellness center services include arrhythmia, blood pressure, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease and cholesterol management; heart rhythm monitoring; cardiac rehabilitation program; Heart Failure Bridge Clinic; pacemaker and implantable cardiac defibrillator implantation and testing; and peripheral vascular disease management.
Three of the most common cardiovascular conditions affecting women, Swales says, are coronary artery disease, which is hardening or narrowing of the arteries; heart failure, which is decreased ability of the heart to pump blood effectively; and high blood pressure.
