School officials are reluctant to speak about an incident at Southington High School last week involving a teacher who was reportedly intoxicated during class at Southington High School.
However, despite their attempts to keep the matter private, the story is making global headlines and evolving with information from several unnamed sources.
Other news outlets are reporting that the teacher was not only drunk, but also soiled himself and may have even gotten physical with a student.
None of this information has been confirmed by school officials. When contacted the day following the incident, Principal Martin Semmel said he could not comment on what happened and Southington Police say that they were not involved with the incident initially.
As the story has spread online, many people have taken the opportunity to share their thoughts about the incident.
“What happened to the days we could actually respect teachers?” said “Jane,” who was commenting on the story by the Daily Mail, a news source in London. “For that matter what happened the days that students showed respect to their teachers? I think we have blurred the line too much, adults trying to be buddies instead of role models.”
Several comments included concerns for the students in the classroom and the hope the teacher would be punished. One man went as far to say he felt that teacher’s unions are to blame because they protect teachers who have harmed children.
“TEACHERS UNIONS MUST BE DISBANDED,” said “Joseph Smith,” who commented on the story published by the New York Daily News. “This teacher should have been fired on the spot, no pay, no benefits, no pension… Teachers just care about their own benefits and covering up for their kind. It’s so sad and must be stopped as your kids suffer irreparable harm.”
A SHS parent confirmed that an email was sent out to parents of the students in that class only about the incident, and other SHS parents did not receive information.
