Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts from Sleeping Giant District (Southington, Wallingford, Meriden, North Haven and Hamden) will be coming to your neighborhood the week of November 1 to distribute notices and/or plastic bags requesting food donations for their 26 Annual “Scouting for Food” drive. On Saturday, Nov. 8, between 9 and 11 a.m., the scouts will return to collect the food donations and deliver them to the food bank in your town. If you received a notice/bag please place a bag containing nonperishable food items (cans or boxes, no glass containers, please) in clear view at your front door/steps or curbside at your mailbox by 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8.
If you did not receive a notice or missed the pickup for your area, you may bring your food donations on Saturday Nov. 8, between 9 a.m. and noon to your local collection site. Boy Scouts will meet your car and carry your donation from your car and sort the food by categories.
All food collected in each town is donated to a food bank in that town. Last year, over 680 Scouts in the five towns of the Sleeping Giant district collected over 36,000 pounds of food.
The collection site for Southington is the First Baptist Church, 581 Meriden Ave. The receiving organizations are the Bread for Life Soup Kitchen and Southington Community Services.
“Scouting for Food” is part of Sleeping Giant District’s commitment to the Good Turn for America program, a national call to service by the Boy Scouts of America to address the issues of hunger, homelessness and poor health in our country.
