The fifth annual toy, coat and non-perishable food drive for the town starts this week and runs through the end of the month.
The drive, originally started in 1999 by Nicole Roy of Hot Tans Salon, has grown every year.
“The first two years was just us,” Roy said. Now, 23 businesses have joined the cause.
Roy said businesses have heard about the drive through word of mouth and asked if they could take part.
The drop off locations are JD’s Pizzeria, Club Fitness, Dolce Vita Day Spa, Pepper Pot, Apogee Dance Academy, Embroidery A2Z, Fancy Bagels, Plantsville Pharmacy, Zingerella’s, Just For You Gift Shoppe, Hearthstone Pub, ACE Appliance, Hot Tans Salon, Fancy Burgers & Franks, Close Harbour Seafood, Pralines, Clarity Skin & Beauty Salon, LaFrance Medical Aesthetics, Fitness Explosion, Tops IGA Market, Explicit Airbrush, Envee Salon & Spa and with head trainer Kim Lee at FitLife.
All donations will be given to Southington Community Services. Roy noted that donations of winter items, such as coats, hats and gloves are a priority.
Mark Fazzolari, of Community Services, is appreciative of the support from Roy and the other business leaders in town. He said the department can use all the help it can get, as every winter more and more people come looking for help.
“It has helped out,” Fazzolari said of the donation drive. “Every year she does it, it gets bigger and better.”
Though most of the businesses will wrap up the drive at the end of the month, Hot Tans Salon will keep their donation bin open through December.
