Dog owners have the opportunity to include their pets in the fight against cancer through the Southington Bark for Life event, which supports cancer research, on Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Southington Drive In.
Three years ago, the American Cancer Society invited Southington’s Relay for Life group to establish a walk that dogs can participate in.
“Dogs are a huge part of people’s lives, so we made a separate event to welcome our canine friends,” said Ashley Alesinkas, who is on the committee.
There will be a track set up for the dogs to walk around with their owners, prize drawings, contests, an agility course, and a dog pageant.
According to Alesinkas, each time a dog walks around the track they will be given beads and whoever walks the most laps with their dog will win. To make things fair, there is a separate track for big and small dogs. In addition, some of the laps will be themed like honor memory lap, survivor lap, and costume lap.
Contests at the third annual Bark for Life will include a dog look a like contest, where judges will determine what owner looks most like their dog. Another contest is the Golden Paw Award, which honors the top fundraising dogs.
For the dog pageant, dogs will be judged on evening wear and obedience, outfit of choice and talent, according to Alesinkas. The judges will crown a king, queen, prince, and princess for the pageant.
In addition to all of the fun dog activities, Alesinkas said there will be vendors at the event as well as Relay for Life team tables.
Registration for the walkathon is $20 and each additional dog is $10. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the welcome ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m.
“Even if you don’t have a dog you’re welcome to join us,” said Alesinkas. “This event is a fun way to help raise money for Relay for Life and cancer.”
