On Thursday, June 19, Southington Firefighters, from IAFF Local 2033, will kick off their annual Fill the Boot campaign to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), the world’s leading nonprofit health agency dedicated to finding treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other neuromuscular diseases. This year, Professional Firefighters from across North America will celebrate their 60th year raising funds to fight the life-threatening muscle disease.
The 2014 Fill the Boot events will help support MDA’s programs of worldwide research, specialized health care services, and day-to-day support – which includes sending children affected by muscular dystrophy to a week-long, barrier-free MDA summer camp at The Channel 3 Kids Camp in Andover, CT. To date the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) has raised over $530 Million dollars for MDA.
In May, two representatives from the Southington Professional Firefighters Local 2033 attended the Annual MDA Boot Camp, that kicks off the season and awards participating Locals that went above and beyond during 2013 Fundraising events. Firefighters from Southington received multiple awards for their efforts, as well as surpassing the years fundraising goal. Firefighters collected a total of $7,500.
Boot drive collections will be planned throughout the summer at various locations throughout Southington. Collection locations will include; West Center Street at the intersection of Bristol St, Walmart plaza, and Executive Boulevard at Target and Lowes. On Thursday, June 19, firefighters will be at the intersection of West Center Street and Bristol Street from 4 to 7 p.m.
