After several months of a comprehensive search process, the Southington school system now has a new superintendent.
The Board of Education appointed Timothy Connellan as the new superitendent Monday night. Serving as Superintendent of Oxford Schools since 2012, Connellan accepted a three-year contract with the district, and will begin his new role on August 11.
His salary is $179,910, with a $5,000 annuity.
“I thank you for the support and confidence you expressed in me,” said Connellan, addressing the school board. “There are so many wonderful things that have been happening in the schools…and in the community in general.”
A resident of Southington for 34 years, Connellan has experience in all levels of education and nine years of experience as a superintendent. Prior to serving as superintendent in Oxford, he was also superintendent in Bethany from 2005 to 2012.
He received his certification as a superintendent from the University of Connecticut. Before his experience as a superintendent, Connellan was a school psychologist in Southington and West Hartford, and an executive director of Shared Services in Regional District #7. He also served as a director and coordinator of special services in South Windsor and North Haven.
Connellan said he feels excited to work in a town where he has raised his family, and looks forward to meeting with all members of the community.
“We love living here, we raised our family here—all three of our children went through the public schools,” said Connellan, who has a Master of Science from Southern Connecticut State University. “I look forward to working on our transition plan and getting in, meeting people, meeting faculty, staff, parents, elected officials, members of civic groups—I’m excited about all of that.” “That’s my first task—to listen.”
Board of Education Chairman Brian Goralski said the district had just under a pool of 20 applicants for the superintendent position. The pool was narrowed down to seven candidates, with three receiving interviews.
Goralski said Connellan’s leadership skills and understanding of Southington stood out among the pool of candidates. He also said Connellan’s vision for the district matched the vision that the school board holds, which shined through during the selection process.
“We selected him because of his vision—it’s aligned with ours with what we think is best for kids, and what we think is the best for the town of Southington,” said Goralski, adding that Connellan’s dedication also stood out.
Connellan is replacing former superintendent Joe Erardi who left earlier this year for Newtown.
