Local community group Nancy Nurtures recently donated 1,000 pounds of food to the Southington Community Services food pantry.

“This is the second year that Nancy Nurtures had a food drive for the Southington Community Services food pantry,” said Mark Fazzolari, assistant director for Community Services. “Nancy Nurtures and Tops have been very supportive of the food pantry and were able to pass that on.”

Nancy Nurtures was founded last August, in memory of Nancylee Binder Salerno, who was killed by a drunk driver going the wrong way on the highway. A mother of five children, Salerno was involved with the family businesses, Tops Market and Carmela Marie. She was also a practicing nurse.

According to a release, Nancy Nurtures was created to improve the quality of life by supporting community organizations that contribute to building strong and healthy families.

Fazzolari said the donation consisted of the staples, past, tuna, cheese, cereals and other like items. The donation was used to replenish the shelves at the food pantry.

The food pantry serves 70 families a day.
