Local roads are passable, but not salted

January 3, 2014

Southington’s highway crews worked throughout the night and all the roads in town are passable, Town Manager Garry Brumback reported.

“They have intentionally not salted to avoid thawing before the subzero temperatures we are expecting tonight,” Brumback said in an update on the storm. “The plan for the roads is to sand the hills and particularly slick areas.”

Police and fire officials are reporting no significant activity due to the storm.

The Calendar House and the library will be open and serve as “warming shelter” during normal business hours. No power outages are expected so the two shelters will not provide food or off hours shelter.

The Plainville/Southington Health District is supporting the warming centers as needed.

Southington Community Services Director Janet Mellon is working with a local hotel to possibly help out the homeless who may be needing shelter. Southington emergency personnel will be on the lookout for those needing assistance.

Town offices opened at 10 a.m. this morning and school was canceled last night.
