For the second year, GivingTuesday, a campaign for a national day of giving to celebrate and encourage charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations, will take place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving – Dec. 3.
To recognize GivingTuesday and the end of the year, many people give back to their community in ways that are meaningful to them, whether it is through volunteering at a local nonprofit or donating monetarily or in-kind to a favorite cause. To assist local residents, Main Street Community Foundation has created the Community Wish List, a collection of needs of nonprofits serving the towns of Bristol, Burlington, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington and Wolcott. The “wishes” include small wishes, such as food items, blankets, batteries, etc.; big wishes, such as refrigerators, laptop computers, stoves, etc.; and volunteer wishes. This list is available year-round and can be found at www.mainstreetfoundation.org.
There are currently 22 organizations included and the majority focus on families in crisis, food and nutrition and basic needs. Donors who would like to fulfill a wish can make gifts directly to the nonprofit organization of their choice by contacting them and referring to the Wish List.
The Community Wish List is a project that was originally undertaken by a group of students at TunxisCommunity College as a VISTA service learning project. Since that time, two groups of students spent a semester each gaining a greater awareness of area organizations, what programs/services they provide and how they can make an even greater impact in lives of local residents. The project was inspired by the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy’s annual “Ways to Share…A Holiday Wish List”, which is released every fall.
