A local youth recently raised more than $600, in only two hours, to help out the NICU at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.
Skylar Prinzhorn, 8, recently held her second annual Skylar’s Stand to raise money for the medical center on behalf of her younger sister Madelyn, 3.
Madelyn, born three months premature in 2010, had spent her first few months in the NICU.
Katie Prinzhorn, Skylar’s mother, said Madelyn was the sole survivor of identical triplets and that it was doubtful that the child would even survive the pregnancy.
Madelyn did survive and she is now a healthy, happy preschooler.
“I always wanted to have a lemonade stand to raise money for myself,” Skylar said. “But then after my sister spent three months in the hospital, I decided to raise it for the children’s hospital. And this year, I decided to put it directly into the NICU.”
Skylar said she spent three weeks preparing for her stand, which was set up in the family’s front yard the Sunday before Labor Day.  The stand was open on Sunday, Sept. 1for two hours and sold baked goods and juice, along with a decorate your own cookie table and make your own bracelet table.
Skylar, along with her siblings, Evan, Jayden and Madelyn, and her good friends Alyssa, Lindsey, and Katelyn operated the stand.
With the help of her family and friends, Skylar was able to raise $618 for the medical center. Last year, the stand, operated at the same time, was able to raise $278.
“I feel awesome once I bring the money in,” Skylar said. “I feel excited after the stand to see how much money I raised for the hospital.”
Katie said she is proud of her daughter and said the family was blown away that they were able to double their goal of raising $300 this year.
“This is who she is,” Katie said of Skylar. “Even though she is only 8, she has always been very thoughtful, generous and empathetic towards others.”
