Junior Miss Plantsville Aurianna Monteiro, along with Plantsville Outstanding teen Katerina Belales, held a walk-a-thon recently to raise money for Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.

Aurianna wanted to raise money for the medical center to say thank you for all their care and support when her sister three-year-old sister Ayva was hospitalized.  Ayva was born with a cleft lip and palate as well as other medical issues, which left her in and out of the hospital for the first year-and-half of her life. Nicole Monteiro, the mother of Aurianna and Ayva, said the staff members of the hospital were “accommodating” and “caring.” They made bracelets with Aurianna during one of her sister’s hospital visits.

Nicole said they have raised $150 so far from the walk-a-thon, and the medical center will receive all the proceeds.

“I thought it was great, it really made Aurianna happy and proud to make a difference in her community,” she said.

Aurianna is also involved in other community service projects like Relay for Life and the Southington Food Bank.  The ten-year-old will raise money for Relay for Life during the Apple Harvest Festival in October.

“I like making people smile,” Aurianna said. “It makes me happy to give back to people.”

If anyone would like to make a donation, mail the checks to 93 Hitchcock Road.
